HUF launches major new website focused on the language of medicine

Friends and supporters of HUF nationwide gathered in Austin this week to celebrate the launch of a major new website focused on documenting and teaching the specialized language of healthcare in South Asia. Language for Health (hindiurduhealth.org) is the product of three years of substantial collaboration between HUF, The University of Texas at Austin, Columbia University, and New York University. Critical Language Scholarship alumna to host informal Q&A

Emily Brandt, UT alumna and 2012 Critical Language Scholarship Ambassador, will host an informal Q&A session for HUF students interested in the CLS program on Thursday, November 3 at 6:30pm over coffee at the Starbucks on 24th St . The Critical Language Scholarship, a program of the United States Department of State, will offer intensive summer language institutes overseas in thirteen critical need foreign languages for summer 2012. HUF revamps Hindi slideshow series

The Hindi Urdu Flagship has just relaunched Dr. Jishnu Shankar's Hindi slideshow series. Now named Presenting Hindi, the series features a redesigned interface and new presentations (with more to come). The series covers a broad range of fundamental grammatical features and 'topic-specific' language categories such as health, economics, and politics. Each presentation makes use of real-world Hindi cultivated from current Hindi periodicals and print advertising; a number also incorporate video material from Bollywood films and Indian television. National Boren Director to discuss scholarships with HUF students

Prestigious scholarship program recruits HUF students

Hindi Urdu Flagship students will have an opportunity this week to meet with a representative for the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program.There will be two sessions with the CLS representative, Andrea Turpin. Seminar on Bengali Cinema

Hindi Urdu Flagship students are invited to attend a talk on Bengali cinema by Dr. Shohini Ghosh this Monday, October 17th at 12pm in the Meyerson Conference Room (WCH 4.118). Ghosh is the Zaki Hussain Professor of Media at the AJK Mass Communication Research Center. She is an essayist on popular culture and a documentary filmmaker. Continue reading >

New series on Hindi poetry

HUF is pleased to introduce our newest web feature, Kāvyārtha — an interactive guided tour of unique moments in Hindi poetry. In this collection of online articles, HUF director Rupert Snell focuses on poetic structure and aesthetics as a means of approaching the artha (the meanings and ends) of kāvya (poetry) in Hindi. The series begins with a focus on Braj and Awadhi, it will gradually expand to encompass Khari Boli and modern Hindi poetry. Continue reading >

HUF students begin new year

After students greeted their peers and welcomed our returning overseas cohort, HUF Director Rupert Snell introduced new faculty and staff to the community and talked briefly about plans and expectations for the coming academic year.
